Synopsis

Vash the Stampede carries a $$60,000,000,000 bounty, branded as a ruthless criminal who annihilates his enemies and levels cities for amusement, earning him the nickname "The Humanoid Typhoon." Rumors claim that anyone who meets his gaze is doomed, as he leaves nothing but ruin in his wake. Yet, in truth, Vash is a gentle soul who insists he has never killed and goes to great lengths to avoid violence. Armed with an eccentric love for doughnuts and a goofy demeanor, Vash wanders the barren landscape of the planet Gunsmoke, shadowed by two insurance agents, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who strive to mitigate the chaos he attracts. However, their journey soon takes a deadly turn when a group of elite assassins emerges, determined to inflict suffering upon the trio. As Vash’s painful past comes to light, his morals and convictions are tested to their absolute limits.

Background

Victor Entertainment's Japanese release featured different opening sequences tailored to each episode. The original Geneon Entertainment USA (previously Pioneer) VHS and DVD releases—including singles, the Signature Series, and the box set—used only the first opening for every episode. This occurred because the Japanese licensor provided clean footage for only the first opening, allowing Geneon to overlay English credits. The error was corrected in Geneon’s 2005/2006 Limited Edition tin releases and the Remix singles. After Geneon USA’s closure in late 2007, the series went out of print. When FUNimation Entertainment acquired the rights in 2010, they repeated the mistake by using only the first opening for all episodes. This was later rectified in the 2013 Anime Classics re-release.
