Synopsis
This film comprises six animated shorts produced by the Human Rights Commission of Korea. Similar to the previous movie, the stories explore the world through the eyes of individuals who deviate from societal norms. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature in 2008 at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards. 1. "The Third Wish" (AN Dong-hui, RYU Jeong-wu): A fairy godmother appears before a visually impaired young woman to grant her three wishes. However, this is no fairytale. The irritable middle-aged fairy wants to complete her task quickly. Yet, she proves helpful as she guides the woman through a bustling marketplace, reminiscent of "Amelie". Despite the challenges posed by indifferent urbanites, the protagonist perseveres. With a walking stick, she taps her way along the "yellow brick road" (guiding tiles for the visually impaired) around the city. 2. "Ajukari" (HONG Deok-pyo) is a street-style cartoon that humorously depicts how a certain masculine "complex" can hinder men. Male circumcision becomes the ultimate measure of being "manly," and those who haven't undergone the procedure fear public baths. 3. "Baby" (LEE Hong-su, LEE Hong-min) depicts the challenges a career woman faces in having a child. Her boss questions, "I'm not saying you can't have maternity leave, but can you afford to raise a child while working?" This clever story covers mother and daughter-in-law dynamics, a parody of "Tazza: The High Rollers," and amusing episodes where an "ambulance bus" picks up multiple patients along the way. 4. "Shine Shine Shining" (KWON Mi-jeong) is illustrated like a warm, watercolor storybook for children. Grade schooler Eun-jin is intelligent and popular, but she harbors a secret. She conceals her curly hair, inherited from her Filipino mother, in braids. 5. "Merry Golasmas" is an endearing claymation, or stop motion animation of models made from clay, plasticine, etc. It examines physical discrimination or stereotypes. In an open audition for a Santa Claus, the genuine Santas—a black one, an Asian one, a female Santa, and one in a wheelchair—lose to a fake Santa, a pot-bellied, Caucasian. 6. "Lies" explores homosexuality. Drawn in pastel-like sketches with art deco-esque details, it is a stunning digital cut-out animation. A homosexual man is pressured by his parents to marry a woman, while others are coerced to fake having a girlfriend or undergo "therapy" to become straight.
