Synopsis
Two years prior, Mitsuki Kouyama's close friend, Eichi Sakurai, relocated to America before she could express her feelings for him. Despite being unable to reach him, they pledged to chase their dreams—Mitsuki as a professional singer and Eichi as an astronomer. She dreams that one day her voice will carry across the globe to him, shining as brightly as the full moon. However, Mitsuki has throat cancer, which weakens her voice and makes singing difficult. Her grandmother, who despises music, pressures her to have surgery to remove the cancer, but Mitsuki refuses, fearing she might lose her voice forever. One day, two shinigami, Meroko Yui and Takuto Kira, appear and reveal she has only one year left to live. Determined to make the most of her remaining time, Mitsuki resolves to become a professional singer with their assistance. Full Moon wo Sagashite chronicles Mitsuki's poignant journey with her shinigami companions as they explore the true meaning of singing—and ultimately, the true meaning of life.
Background
Full Moon wo Sagashite adheres to its manga source for roughly one episode before diverging into an original storyline. VIZ Media initially licensed the series but only released the first 28 episodes on DVD before discontinuing it. The full series was later made available in a subbed-only format on Hulu until it was removed from the platform in August 2013.
