Synopsis

After a demonic boar attacks his Emishi village, young Prince Ashitaka risks his life to save his people. As the beast dies, it inflicts a curse upon his arm, bestowing him with dark powers while slowly draining his life. Ordered by the village elders to seek a remedy in the west, Ashitaka journeys to Tatara, the Iron Town, only to be drawn into a bitter struggle: Lady Eboshi, who leads the town’s relentless deforestation, faces off against Princess San and the enraged forest spirits, who seek vengeance for the human destruction of their home. As the battle between nature and humanity intensifies, Ashitaka strives to mediate between the two sides, even as he grapples with the growing demon within him. Princess Mononoke explores the interplay between technology and the natural world, illustrating how mutual understanding could pave the way to peace.

Background

At the 52nd Mainichi Film Awards in 1997, the film received the Best Japanese Movie, Best Animation, and Japanese Movie Fans' Choice honors. The following year, it earned the Best Picture award at the 21st Japan Academy Awards.
