Synopsis
Kenji, Asakura, and Oota are a trio of school friends known for their apathetic behavior and frequent altercations with other delinquents. Seeking a new thrill beyond their mundane fights, Kenji impulsively decides to form a band. With Kenji on bass, Oota on guitar, and Asakura on drums, they embark on their musical journey despite their lack of prior experience. To their surprise, their first session exceeds their expectations, marking the beginning of a passionate exploration of music.
Background
Ongaku was produced over a span of seven years. The film was awarded the Nelvana Grand Prize at the 2019 Ottawa International Animation Festival. It also received the Noburou Oofuji Award at the 75th Mainichi Film Awards in 2021. In the same year, the film secured the grand prize in the Entertainment Division of the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards. The film was released in a Blu-ray and DVD bundle on March 9, 2021 by Shout! Factory.
