Synopsis

In 742 AD, Japanese monks Yoei and Fusho visit Jian Zhen, the abbot of Daming Temple in Yangzhou, China, asking for his help in implementing Buddhist precepts in Japan. When his disciples refuse, Jian Zhen volunteers. From 743 AD, he attempts to sail to Japan multiple times, succeeding on his sixth attempt after losing his eyesight. Accompanied by Chinese artisans, Jian Zhen makes significant contributions to Buddhism, culture, architecture, and traditional Chinese medicine in Japan.
