Sinopsis

While exploring the National Library, Miaka Yuuki and Yui Hongo discover an ancient book that emits a crimson glow, pulling them into its unknown realm. There, they face dangerous slave traders but are rescued by Tamahome, a strong young man marked with a Chinese character on his forehead. Just as they catch their breath, the same red light reappears and drags Yui away. Determined to find her friend, Miaka turns to Tamahome for help. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they meet the emperor Hotohori, who identifies Miaka as the prophesied priestess of Suzaku, the kingdom’s guardian deity. According to legend, by assembling Suzaku’s seven Celestial Warriors, the priestess can summon the god and have any wish fulfilled. Hotohori believes this will save his nation, and seeing it as a way to resolve her own dilemma, he persuades Miaka to embrace her destiny. Back at the library, Yui finds herself alone, unable to interfere as she watches Miaka face daring trials as the book’s chosen heroine.

Fondo

Although Fushigi Yuugi contained some unsettling visuals, it aired in Japan at 6 p.m., a timeslot that now prohibits such material. The English adaptation was distributed on DVD and VHS by Geneon Entertainment, previously Pioneer, under the title Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play. The DVDs were released in eight volumes from July 27, 2004, to September 20, 2005. It was also issued as two box sets: Suzaku on November 30, 1999, and Seiryuu on December 12, 2000. Seven years later, Media Blasters released two additional DVD box sets and a complete series collection under the original title. The sets, Fushigi Yuugi Season 1 and Season 2, debuted on June 19, 2012, and February 12, 2013, respectively, with the full collection arriving on April 28, 2015.
