Sinopse
In 2071, crime persists as humanity spreads across the galaxy, establishing colonies on distant planets that mirror Earth's societies. These new worlds grapple with murder, narcotics, and theft, prompting a rise in bounty hunters to track down interstellar fugitives. Spike Spiegel and Jet Black earn a modest living by chasing criminals across space. Though Spike hides his violent past behind a carefree facade, its weight lingers. Jet, meanwhile, copes with his own burdens while looking after Spike and their ship, the Bebop. Their crew grows with the addition of Faye Valentine, a cunning con artist; Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, an eccentric child prodigy; and Ein, a genetically enhanced Welsh corgi. As the Bebop crew forms deeper bonds and pursues a diverse array of outlaws, their lives are upended by a threat tied to Spike’s history. When a rival’s deranged scheme unfolds, Spike must decide between embracing his new family or seeking vengeance for the scars of his past.
Background
Cowboy Bebop first premiered on TV Tokyo in spring 1998, but only episodes 2-3, 7-15, and 18 were broadcast, concluding with a recap special titled Yose Atsume Blues. This was due to heightened anime censorship following the controversies surrounding Evangelion, leading to most of the series being pulled for its violent content. Later that fall, satellite channel WOWOW aired the entire series uncensored. Though Cowboy Bebop did not achieve high ratings in Japan, it sold over 19,000 DVD units in its initial release and 81,000 overall. Spike Spiegel won Best Male Character, and Megumi Hayashibara earned Best Voice Actor for her portrayal of Faye Valentine in the 1999 and 2000 Anime Grand Prix, respectively. The series found its greatest impact in the United States, debuting on Adult Swim in 2001 with numerous reruns since. Its strong Western influences resonated deeply with American audiences, making it a pivotal introduction to adult-oriented anime.
