Kankara Sanshin

This film depicts the Battle of Okinawa during the final days of World War II. The island of Okinawa was the site of a brutal conflict that left the population devastated and the landscape scarred. Post-war, Okinawa came under the control of the United States Military, facing severe resource scarcity and daily struggles for survival. Despite their hardships, the Okinawans found solace in song and dance. However, the destruction of the war had made traditional sanshin instruments rare. Resourceful Okinawans repurposed powdered milk cans to create new sanshin, bringing music back to their lives.
