Sinopse

Hitomi Kanzaki, a typical 15-year-old girl fascinated by tarot cards and divination, witnesses the sudden arrival of Van Fanel and a ferocious dragon one night. Guided by her own premonition, Van slays the beast, only for a radiant column of light to engulf them both, transporting Hitomi to Gaea—a strange world where the Earth floats in the heavens. In this unfamiliar realm, Hitomi learns that Van is the prince of Fanelia, a kingdom soon besieged by the malevolent Zaibach Empire. Van attempts to repel the invaders using his family’s ancient guymelef, Escaflowne—a powerful mechanized armor—but fails, leading to Fanelia’s destruction. Fleeing the ruins, Hitomi and Van meet Allen Schezar, a dashing knight from Asturia who bears a striking resemblance to Hitomi’s Earthly crush. With new allies at their side, Van and Hitomi take up the fight against Zaibach as the empire seeks to resurrect a long-lost power.

Background

Escaflowne was initially intended as a 39-episode series, but budget reductions and major plot revisions shortened it to 26 episodes. Due to tight production schedules, certain scenes in early episodes were omitted during the original broadcast and later reinstated in the Japanese home video releases, known as the Director’s Cut. The North American Bandai Entertainment versions used the TV masters, causing sync issues between the English dub and the Japanese home video masters for those episodes. FUNimation later acquired the rights and, in 2016, launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to re-dub the entire Director’s Cut edition.
