Synopsis
In the mid-19th century, the Tokugawa Shogunate is on its last legs. With foreign powers pressuring Japan to open its borders, the nation faces internal and external challenges. After the U.S. Navy forces Japan to establish relations, Toshiakira Kawaji is sent to negotiate with the Russians, whose powerful frigate Diana has arrived. However, talks with the temperamental commander Yevfimy Vasilyevich Putyatin prove difficult. When a massive earthquake strikes Japan's coast, the disaster might just be the catalyst to bring the two nations together.
Background
Bakumatsu no Spasibo is based on the true events of Yevfimy Putyatin's diplomatic mission to Japan and the signing of the Treaty of Shimoda in 1855.
