Synopsis
Mushi are the most basic forms of life, existing without goals or purposes aside from simply "being." They transcend the concepts of "good" and "evil" and can mimic natural phenomena like plants, diseases, and rainbows. This vague definition of Mushi inhabits the vibrant world of Mushishi, as calling them a form of life is an oversimplification. Detailed information on Mushi is scarce because most humans are unaware of their existence. Ginko, a Mushishi, ponders the purpose of Mushi and their place in the world's hierarchy of life. As a Mushishi, Ginko researches these entities, chasing rumors of occurrences tied to Mushi to find an answer that could lead to the meaning of life itself.
Background
Mushishi adapts the first 26 chapters of the manga, one per episode. The anime aired these stories in a different order than that of the manga. The series won the Tokyo Anime Award in the Television category in 2006.
