Synopsis
The story unfolds in 19th century China during the Qing Dynasty, a time when the Emperor was weak and the country was on the brink of chaos. It is also set in a fictional era known as "The Era of the Cooking Wars," where top chefs with different cooking styles competed to improve their skills and become the best chef in China. In this country, insulting a high-grade chef or messing around with cooking could land a person in jail, and impersonating a top chef was as serious as usurping authority. Chefs competed for respect and power, but also risked losing everything. China had four major regions: Beijing, Szechuan, Shanghai, and Guangdong. The story begins in Szechuan, Mao's birthplace. After the death of Mao's mother, Pai, known as the 'Fairy of Cuisine,' Mao becomes a Super Chef to take the title of Master Chef of his mother's restaurant. However, before he can take his mother's place, he travels through China to learn more about the many ways of cooking, hoping to become a legendary chef like his mother. During his journey, he meets great friends and fierce rivals who challenge him in the field of cooking.
