Synopsis

Though Kyouko Honda's tragic death left a lasting impact, her memory continues to guide her loved ones through difficult times. However, Kyouko's past was not always marked by wisdom and radiance. Abandoned by her family and ostracized by society, she turned to a life of delinquency, jeopardizing her education and future. Her path takes a turn when she meets Katsuya, a teaching intern at her school, whose kindness and attention help her open her heart to new possibilities.

Fruits Basket: Prelude focuses on the Kyouko to Katsuya no Monogatari prequel, covering part of the manga's 16th volume not shown in the television series. The movie also features a compilation of the three-season anime, new scenes written by the author set after the original story, and Mubichike cards with illustrations by Natsuki Takaya. A Blu-ray version was released exclusively at theaters screening the film, and limited edition items were distributed to the audience on a first-come, first-served basis. The gifts included an original 16-page manga establishing the setting for the new scenes and excerpts from the movie. Another Blu-ray was released on June 24, 2022, including a bonus eight-page manga booklet. In its first two days, Fruits Basket: Prelude grossed a total of 33 million yen, leading to additional screenings to accommodate the high turnout of viewers.
