Mizu no Sei: Kappa Hyakuzu

The existence of Kappa, water imps, has long been believed in Japan, said to inhabit rivers and lakes. People have seen them, and they appear in paintings, sculptures, and stories. In the 20th century, Japan became highly industrialized, with reclaimed lakes, concreted riverbanks, and chemicals used in fields. Fish, insects, birds, and animals lost their homes, as did Kappa. This film vividly depicts the waterside scene in Japan when Kappa lived, suggesting that if environmental pollution is prevented, we might see them again.
