Synopsis

Fuu Kasumi, a young and accident-prone waitress, leads a quiet life working at a small teahouse—until she spills a drink on a customer, drawing the unwanted attention of a group of samurai. Desperate, she turns to Mugen, a samurai in the shop, who defeats them with his unconventional, breakdance-like combat style. However, Mugen then provokes Jin, a reserved ronin with a precise and traditional swordsmanship, leading to a fierce duel. The fight escalates, resulting in the destruction of the teahouse and the accidental death of the local magistrate’s son. Arrested for their crime, Mugen and Jin are sentenced to execution, but Fuu rescues them and hires the pair as her bodyguards. Though she has lost her home, the former waitress is determined to find a mysterious samurai who smells of sunflowers and enlists their help. Initially reluctant, the two eventually agree, and the trio sets off on a journey to locate this enigmatic warrior—provided Fuu can prevent Mugen and Jin from killing each other along the way. Set in an alternate Edo Period Japan, Samurai Champloo follows the adventures of these three unconventional travelers in a quest filled with action, humor, and thrilling swordplay, all accompanied by a distinctive hip-hop soundtrack.

Arrière-plan

Samurai Champloo was the only anime to feature music by the late Japanese hip-hop producer Nujabes before his passing in 2010. The series also inspired the 2006 PlayStation 2 video game Samurai Champloo: Sidetracked. The anime aired in two parts: the first half premiered on Fuji TV on Thursdays at 2:28 AM from May 20, 2004, to September 23, 2004, while the second half aired on BS Fuji on Saturdays at 10:30 AM from January 22, 2005, to March 19, 2005. Geneon Entertainment USA initially licensed and released the series in North America, but after the company’s closure in late 2007, the show went out of print. FUNimation Entertainment later secured a distribution deal with Geneon to release some of their titles, including Samurai Champloo. Once the deal ended, FUNimation acquired the full licensing rights to the series.
