Sinopse
During his summer stay at his aunt's house, young and frail Shou makes an astonishing discovery. Following the house cat into the bushes, he catches a glimpse of a tiny girl, no bigger than his finger. Known as "Borrowers," these miniature beings survive by taking small items from humans. The girl, Arrietty, introduces herself and reveals she lives in the house's basement with her parents, Pod and Homily. Shou is thrilled by the idea of such unique neighbors, but he fails to grasp the daily challenges they face. In addition to hiding their existence, they must venture into human territory to survive. Despite her parents' warnings, Arrietty befriends Shou, leading to unexpected events that could change their lives forever.
Background
Karigurashi no Arrietty is based on Mary Norton's 1952 novel The Borrowers. It marks the directorial debut of Hiromasa Yonebayashi. The film's score was composed by French artist Cécile Corbel, the first non-Japanese composer to work with Studio Ghibli. The film received critical acclaim for its animation and music, winning the Animation of the Year award at the 34th Japan Academy Prize and becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film at the Japanese box office in 2010, with over $145 million worldwide.
